The rules are simple. The challenge is visual fluency.
118 Easy Sudoku Puzzles with the American Sign Language Numbers
What this book is:
A large-format Sudoku puzzle book for ASL number handshape recognition, built around the American Sign Language numbers 1-9.
Standard Sudoku rules with handshape illustrations instead of printed digits. Learning the signs is one thing. Reading them fluently is the real challenge. This book trains exactly that.
Designed for sign language learners, teachers, homeschool families, Sudoku enthusiasts, and anyone who wants structured practice with ASL number handshapes.
Sudoku is a natural fit for number handshape practice. Unlike passive number search puzzles, Sudoku requires active reasoning about each handshape, building recognition that transfers to real communication.
What this book contains:
118 easy Sudoku puzzles in 30-point type, each filling about two-thirds of an 8.5 x 11 inch page with space for annotations. Difficulty varies by the number of pre-filled cells. Solutions appear on the page spread immediately following each puzzle.
The handshape illustrations were purpose-built using a custom professional sign language font and validated by at least two independent, recognized experts, including an expert from Gallaudet University. All signs are shown from the viewer’s perspective, optimized for recognition rather than production.
Also included:
• complete Sudoku instructions and solution strategies
• ASL numbers reference chart
• ASL alphabet reference chart, and
• two bonus cut-out alphabet charts
Created for Project FingerAlphabet, a pro bono publico project dedicated to making accurate sign language materials freely accessible. The project was nominated for the German Award for Civic Engagement. Free downloadable alphabet charts for more than twelve sign languages are available at fingeralphabet.org.
Primary market:
USA (ASL learners, homeschool families, sign language educators, Sudoku enthusiasts).
Note:
This is a Sudoku puzzle book for ASL number handshape recognition. It is not a full American Sign Language course.
Know the signs. Train your eyes. Take the ASL Sudoku Challenge.

Additional Information
Is this a full ASL course?
No. This book is a collection of 118 easy Sudoku puzzles for recognizing American Sign Language number handshapes. It is not a full American Sign Language course.
Who is this book for?
This book is for ASL learners, teachers, homeschool families, sign language educators, Sudoku fans looking for a new challenge, and anyone who wants structured practice with ASL number handshapes 1-9.
Why Sudoku instead of number search puzzles?
Sudoku requires active reasoning about each handshape: which one is missing, which one belongs in this cell. This active engagement builds stronger recognition than passively scanning for numbers. It is also a well-known, enjoyable puzzle format.
What does "viewer's perspective" mean?
Sign language illustrations are often shown from the side or at angles that help you understand how to form the sign. This book shows all handshapes from the viewer’s perspective, the way you see them when someone signs to you. This trains recognition (reading signs) rather than production (making signs).
Are all puzzles easy?
Yes. All 118 puzzles are rated easy. The difficulty varies by how many cells are pre-filled. Puzzles with more pre-filled cells are easier; puzzles with fewer require more deduction. A volume with harder puzzles was planned but has not (yet) been published.
Can teachers copy pages for classroom use?
For United States classroom use, copying pages from commercial puzzle books, activity books, or workbooks is not automatically covered by fair use. U.S. copyright guidance treats consumable educational materials as a special case.
Teachers and schools in the United States who want to copy pages from this title for classroom sets need written permission from the publisher or a classroom copying license.
For classroom copying outside the United States, please check the copyright rules that apply in your country or contact the publisher for permission.
Are free ASL alphabet materials available?
Yes. Free Project FingerAlphabet ASL alphabet charts are available at fingeralphabet.org/ASL under their stated license.
The book includes a link to the free downloadable American Sign Language alphabet materials.
Can bookstores and libraries order this title?
Yes. Bookstores and libraries can order this title through book-trade and print-on-demand channels where available. Availability, prices, and physical specifications may vary by retailer, marketplace, print partner, and local tax handling.
